Files not playing in Windows Media Player
Solution

Problem Description:

When you try and open the lesson files using windows media player, the files may not play, and you may get this message:"The file that you are trying to use requires a software component on your computer to be upgraded. We recommend that you close windows media player before upgrading the component. Do you want to go to a web page that can help you upgrade the component."

You may also get other error messages and an error code.

 Solution:

To remediate the problem, you need to install a Windows Media DRM patch that is provided by Microsoft. The patch is necessary for computers that installed certian Microsoft updates. This particular update from Microsoft caused problems with the Windows Media DRM software, and Microsoft subsequently had to provide this patch to fix the problem.

The patch only takes a few seconds to run, then it is done and your Windows Media Player will work properly with the lesson files.

1. Ensure your Windows login has "administrator rights". This following process WILL FAIL if you do not have "administrator rights".

2. Important->Turn up the sound on your computer so you can hear the audible "Blip" that will be heard during this process. The blip tells you that you need to allow the patch to be installed.

 3. In Windows Media Player 11, click the menu item Help->Check For Updates (press Ctl-M if you dont see the menus). Your player may or may not need an update.

4. -> Close your Windows Media Player.

5. Install the DRM security patch from Microsoft: http://drmlicense.one.microsoft.com/crlupdate/en/crlupdate.html (Requires Internet Explorer)

NOTE: This patch requires you to acknolwledge a security warning prompt before the parch will run. The patch WILL FAIL with an error message If you do not respond to the security prompt. The prompt is usally a small banner or strip at the top of the browser window that you must click, however many people fail to see it, and the patch doesent run. You will also hear a "Blip" sound, an audible prompt that it is waiting for you. If you hear the Blip, you know there is a prompt waiting for you!

Reboot. This will solve the problem.
